Margaret was baptised on the 3rd February 1868 at the Shoalhaven Methodist Church by K Caldwell. Her father Samuel’s occupation was listed as ‘farmer’ and their residential address was Jasper’s Brush.

Margaret married James LAYTON on the 17th April 1884 NSW at Kangaroo Mount, NSW according to Presbyterian rites. James was a dairy farmer. His parents were not listed on the marriage certificate, but he was the son of James LAYTON and Mary SHARP. Margaret, being aged eighteen, was listed as a minor on her marriage certificate, although her parents are not listed either. The marriage was witnessed by Walter J LAYTON and Rebecca LAYTON.

Margaret passed away in 1928, aged 62 at Byron Bay, and is buried at Bangalow in the old Anglican Cemetery, NSW. James went on to later remarry to Florence COLLINS on the 2nd August 1933 at the Methodist Parsonage, in Lismore, NSW, at the age of 70. He later passed away aged 92, and is also buried in the old Anglican Section of the Bangalow Cemetery.

Margaret and James named their property at Boat Harbour, NSW, ‘Ollouber’, which includes part of all three of their son’s names, Oliver, Louis, and Bertie. Margaret and James were to move to the North Coast in 1898 and have a family of six children, as follows: Elsie Maud LAYTON b. 29th November 1889 at Berrima, NSW Oliver Alfred LAYTON  b.1890 at Berrima, NSW Louis George LAYTON  b. 20th July 1894 at Moss Vale, NSW Bertie James LAYTON b.1898 at Murwillumbah, NSW Ivy Maggie LAYTON  b. 20th September 1900 at Ballina, NSW Violet May LAYTON  b. 16th May 1904 at Newrybar, NSW
